Outdoor Appeal: Your Dream Deck Consider these thoughts before building that valuable living area. "Size it up. Proportion is of the utmost importance. Too small and it looks like an afterthought; too large and it overwhelms the house. Multiple deck levels may be a good solution if you have space constraints. You can grill below and dine above. And in some cases, the lower level should be larger than the upper, creating a more balanced appearance, says John Lucas of John E. Lucas Construction in Tuscaloosa County."--an excerpt by Molly Teuke, Home Builders Association of Alabama Magazine 3. Choosing your decking materials... Decking Material Choices: Material Magic: Wood vs. Synthetics (from Home Builders Association of Alabama magazine) Wood has always been a standard for decks, but synthetics made of recycled materials are gaining popularity. Here are some interesting facts about both. WOOD Lumber varies by color, hardness and weight. The most popular and cost-effective variety is pressure-treated southern yellow pine, which is injected with a chemical preservative. Western red cedar, redwood, Ipe (Brazilian hardwood), and mahogany also are popular choices. SYNTHETICS Less Maintenance is required with synthetic deck materials, but achieving a natural look can be a challenge. Shop around and compare samples to strike the right balance. Synthetic decks usually are made of wood and recycled plastic composites, 100% plastic, vinyl, aluminum, or laminated vinyl membrane.
